After Losing a Parent: A Gentle Guide to What Comes Next

We're so sorry. Losing a parent is hard enough without paperwork, deadlines and decisions piling up at the same time. This page is here to help you see what needs attention now, what can wait, and where you can lean on others for help. Take it one step at a time.

    In the first few weeks

    • Find the will and the executor. The executor named in the will is responsible for handling the estate. If that's you, you don't need to know everything right away. You just need to start.
    • Look for life insurance. Check for policy documents, letters from insurers, and premium payments in bank records. Coverage through work or a bank is easy to miss. We can help you track down policies and file claims.
    • Let key organizations know. That includes Service Canada (for CPP and OAS), banks, and your parent's employer or pension plan. Service Canada can also tell you whether a CPP death benefit or survivor's pension may be available.

    In the months ahead

    • Probate. Depending on the assets, the executor may need to apply for probate in Ontario before banks will release accounts.
    • The final tax return. A final return is due for the year of death, and the estate may need its own returns too. An accountant can help, especially if there are RRSPs, RRIFs or investments involved.
    • Don't rush big decisions. If you receive an inheritance or insurance money, it's okay to keep it somewhere safe while you grieve. There's no prize for deciding fast.

    Looking after yourself, too

Many people find that losing a parent makes them think about their own plans: their will, their insurance, what they'd want for their own kids. That's natural. When you're ready, and not before, we're here to help you put your own plans in order.

    Where we can help

    • Tracking down and claiming life insurance policies
    • Understanding what an inheritance means for your taxes and your plans
    • Reviewing your own coverage and estate plan when the time is right
